William R. Whitmore, 87 years old to the day, died in Montague, MA on May 27, 2017. He was born on May 27, 1930 in Sunderland, MA, the son of Philip F. Whitmore and Martha Richardson Whitmore.

William (Bill) grew up in Sunderland and attended Deerfield Academy, graduating in 1949. He went on to University of Massachusetts where he was a member of the Lamda Chi fraternity and earned his BA degree in 1953. He then immediately started his long career with General Electric Co. where he became a Lighting Specialist in the Lamp Division. Bill was a member and president of the Illuminating Engineers Society, as well as an active supporter of the Boy Scouts. During his retirement and after his own bout with prostate cancer, he worked to create a support group called UsTOO for other men coping with prostate cancer. His involvement and leadership spawned an organization that is now thriving nationwide.

William is survived by former wife JoAnn Roberts Whitmore, children Jane Whitmore, Dan Whitmore and Julie Whitmore, and three grandchildren. He is predeceased by his two sisters Mary McClintock and Carolyn Shilling.

The family wishes to express their great gratitude to Jodi and Roger Cloutier who took care of and made a loving home for William over the last few years.
