Greenfield – Lt. CMD Vincent J. McHugh USN, 89, of Lillian St., Greenfield, died at home on Saturday, September 22, 2018 in the early morning hours with his wife by his side. The son of Vincent and Esther Miller, he was born in Corning, NY, on January 3, 1929.

The family moved to Greenfield in 1944. He entered Greenfield High School as a sophomore in October 1944. His home room partner was Phyllis O’Hara, whom he married 74 years later. Active in all sports, he was well known and liked by his classmates. The 1947 year book described him as “the finest thing that one can say about “Vinnie” is, to use a trite phrase, “he’s a swell guy”.

Vincent had made his own “end of life” plans and following cremation, there were to be no services of any kind. His cremains were to be returned to his wife with the directions that they remain together in death.

Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving 28 years throughout the U.S. and at sea. He received his A.B. and Masters Degrees at Purdue University and later received an MBA. He married Ruth Eithier and she later predeceased him on October 6, 2012. They located in 22 states by the end of his naval service. They returned to Massachusetts, living in Hadley, Greenfield and Gill.

He is survived by his wife Phyllis O’Hara, his sister Alice Clapp of NH, his sons Vincent Jr. of MA and Tom of NH and his daughter Carolyn Abramo of CT, as well as extended McHugh family.
