Sophie C. (Bartos) Petroski, 96, of Eastern Avenue, So. Deerfield, formally of Sunderland, passed away August 18, 2012, at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility in Greenfield.
Sophie was born August 24, 1915 to John and Stella (Skorupski) Bartos of School Street, Sunderland. She married Henry E. Petroski of Leverett on November 12, 1934. They lived in Leverett for several years before moving to Sunderland, where Henry built their home on School Street.
She was a waitress at Pall Mell Farm Restaurant and at the Hatfield Club. She was a cook at Cozy Corner Nursing Home, Frontier Regional High School and retired as head cook from Hampshire Dining Commons at the University of Massachusetts.
Sophie was a life-long member of Holy Name of Jesus Church in So. Deerfield where she belonged to the Ladies Social Club, the Adoration Society and sang in the choir. She was an active member of the Sunderland Grange.
She enjoyed crocheting, sewing beautiful doll cloths and dance costumes, without using patterns. She was a wonderful cook and baker. Her Sunday night gatherings of family and friends were legendary.
Sophie is survived by her daughters, Marjorie Sanderson, Mary Ruddock and her husband Harry of So. Deerfield and Jean Thompson and her husband David of Columbia, So. Carolina, her sisters Jessie Kudukey of Sunderland and Felicia Baronas of So. Deerfield. She left behind nine grand children, twelve great grand children and one great-great grandson. She was pre-deceased by her husband Henry, in April 1999, her son-in-law Herb Sanderson in June 2012, her sisters Helen Petroski, Marion Gromaski and Elizabeth Bandalevich and three brothers that died in childhood.
There are no calling hours. A Requiem Mass will be Wednesday at 2pm in the Holy Name of Jesus Polish National Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wrisley Funeral Home, So. Deerfield
