Leverett, MA — Roy A. LaClaire, 85, of Moores Corner, Leverett and Sunderland, MA passed away peacefully on October 12, 2022 in Springfield, MA. He was born on May 28,1937 in Montague, MA, son of the late Joseph and Harriette (Bourne) LaClaire.

He graduated from New Salem Academy and went on to serve four years in the Air Force. Upon honorable discharge, he went to work as an auto mechanic in Sunderland and later bought the business and renamed it Roy's Service Station. He mentored many people while running the station over the next 54 years. For Roy, service was so much more than just working on cars - and for those who knew him, know that truer words could not be spoken. He was a member and served the Harmony/Bay State Lodge of Masons for over 55 years.

To many he was known as Roy, Uncle Roy, Roz, Rizo, and Mr. Roy. He was a faith-based, humble, honest, generous and patient man with compassion for others.

Roy enjoyed spending time with friends, perusing tag sales and flea markets, and chair caning - a pastime he partook in for many years - as well as hosting the annual family reunion.

He was a player on many softball teams until age 65, including the state winning Shutesbury team, which with the team founded and built the Shutesbury Athletic Club. He was also a member of the Sunderland Men's Club.

Thank you to all who gave care and kindness, particularly over the last year: especially Dr. Ravid & Nurse Helene of Lown Cardiovascular Group, Cooley Dickinson VNA, Baystate Medical Center Comfort Care, family, friends, and neighbors. You are all exceptional people.

Survived by partner, Karen Keegan, and her children, Kathryn and Andrew Cerow; brother Leonard, sisters Phyllis Young, Elly Wetherby, June Graves; and Brian O'Malley. He was predeceased by brothers, Joseph, Alden, Oliver, James, sister, Marion LaClaire Norwood.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Shriners Children's Hospital, Attn: Donations, 516 Carew St, Springfield, MA 01104, or the charity of your choice.
