Robert Joseph LaBrie

1929 – 2014

Robert Joseph LaBrie, 84, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2014. He was born in Holyoke to the late Anna Rose Gore. Bobby was raised in Holyoke and later moved to South Hadley where he raised his five children. Most recently he resided in South Deerfield.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran and served in the Korean War. In his earlier years, Bobby was employed by Stella D’oro and State Line Potato Chips. He later founded and was co-owner of OKE-DOKE Popcorn in Whately. He was most proud of that accomplishment. In his retirement, Bobby spent many summers operating his hot dog cart, Dick’s Dogs (also known as Bobby’s LongHotDogs) at Lake Wyola in Shutesbury. He enjoyed having his children and grandchildren working the cart with him during the summer months.

In his leisure time, Bobby loved to restore antique vehicles. He had a special talent for taking something not wanted and restoring it to its original condition. He was especially proud of his baby blue ’66 Mustang convertible, bright yellow ’46 Willy Jeep, and his hot pink ’63 Willy Jeep.

Bobby was predeceased by his two brothers, Francis (1988) and Earl (1990), and his niece Joann Pijar (2001).

He leaves his five children, David LaBrie and wife Allyson of South Hadley, Cathy LaBrie of South Hadley, Mary LaBrie and fiancé Jack Gilligan of South Hadley, Ann Strycharz and husband David of Granby, Rose Mick and husband Ken of Granby. Bobby also leaves his seven beloved grandchildren, Courtney and Katelyn LaBrie of South Hadley, Melissa, Andrew, and Lexie Strycharz of Granby, Rachel and Collin Mick of Granby, several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Bobby was a hard worker with a big heart. He will be remembered by many as kind, generous, compassionate and a loyal friend.
