DEERFIELD/GREENFIELD – Nancy B. Bell, 90, formerly of Deerfield, MA, died September 22, 2018.

She was born in Washington D.C., on October 26, 1927, the daughter of Otho Collier Barkley and Frances H. (Strong) Morris. She grew up in Hudson, NY and Washington D.C. She earned her degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts & Librarian degree from University of Rhode Island.

 

Nancy ran the Old Deerfield Nursery School in the 1950s with her good friend Joan Arms, of Old Deerfield, MA, as well as teaching school abroad in 1960s in Colombia, Peru & Malaysia. In the 1980s & 90s she was the librarian of the Shelburne Falls Free Public Library & the Dickinson Library in Old Deerfield. Her 47 years as Coordinator of Tours & Guiding at Historic Deerfield was capped by earning the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Governor’s Citation in 2008, for her “dedication and service to the traveling public”. After retiring she was an active volunteer with Memorial Hall Museum running their gift shop.

 

She is predeceased by her brother Warren H. Barkley in 2012 & best friend Sara M. Mahoney in 2015.

 

She is survived by her daughters Pam B. Haman & husband Bruce of W. Townsend MA, Lee Bell of Arizona, Roberley Bell & husband Jim Morris of Batavia, NY; grandchildren Robin H. Tasca & husband Jeff of Paxton, MA, Justin Simon & partner Marilyn Murphy of Tempe, AZ; a great-granddaughter Abby H. Tasca, a niece, nephews, several close cousins, the Lenoue family of Pawley’s Island, SC, as well as her long time caregiver Elaine Jarvis of S. Hadley, MA.

 

A committal service & burial will be Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 11 AM in Brookside Cemetery, South Deerfield, MA, with her cousin the Reverend Jennie Ott officiating. A reception will follow at the Teachers Center at Memorial Hall Museum 10 Memorial St., Old Deerfield, MA. Local arrangements are by the Wrisley Funeral Home, South Deerfield, MA. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association (PVMA), P.O. Box 428, 10 Memorial St., Deerfield, MA 01342.
