Maureen Mary (Fifield) Abernathy died Wednesday, May 13, 2015 after a courageous battle with Corticobasal Degeneration Disease, in Vallejo, California. Maureen was born September 10, 1958 in Middlebury, Vermont. She was the daughter of Dorothy Lois (Bragg) Fifield and Rene William Fifield.

Maureen’s earliest education was in Chester, VT. She later attended South Deerfield Elementary School and graduated from Frontier Regional School in 1977. She received an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts at Greenfield Community College. Maureen then attended North Adams State College where she earned a BA in education with a minor in psychology. She served her country in the United States Army for four years. While in the army she took general medical courses.

On April 13, 1986 she married Carlos Abernathy. Maureen had two children. Her daughter, Jillian Dawn Abernathy predeceased her on July 19, 2003. Her son, Jordan Von Abernathy is currently serving in the United States Army. Maureen was a dedicated mother and loved her children profoundly.

Maureen worked many years in Social Services working directly with the public.

Her favorite position was as a Family Support Specialist in Louisville, Kentucky. She moved to Vallejo, Calif. in 2007. It was in California that the effects of Corticobasal Degeneration noticeably surfaced. Her mother-in-law, Claudia Abernathy-McGriff was diligent in getting her diagnosed and getting her the care she needed. Fran Carlson of Vallejo, Calif. was her caregiver and best friend. Fran provided Maureen normalcy, pretty clothes, outings, and so much more. Maureen spent the last year of her life at the Genesis Care Home in Vallejo. The administrator, Sharon Henderson took a special interest in her and they became close friends.

Maureen enjoyed biking, aerobics, hiking, and was an avid runner. She was often fondly referred to by her friends as “Aerobic Queen” or “Army Strong”. She enjoyed reading, writing, and music. She taught Sunday school at the Congregational Church in South Deerfield. She was a member of the General Assembly Church in Vallejo.

Besides her parents Rene and Dorothy Fifield of 44 Graves Street, South Deerfield, and her son, Jordan Abernathy, she leaves her siblings, Colleen Descavich, Shaun Fifield, Shannon Fifield, Doreen Fifield, and Shane Fifield. She leaves her former husband, Carlos Abernathy, her mother-in-law Claudia Abernathy-McGriff, her sister-in-laws LaDonna Medina and Kim Abernathy. She leaves her only aunt Barbra Bragg, several cousins, nieces and nephews. Maureen will be remembered for her strength and humor in the face of her debilitating condition.
