There are no calling hours. A burial for Leonard and Steffie will be held at Brookside Cemetery in South Deerfield followed by a Celebration of Life (place to be determined) on Sunday, September 16, 2018

Leonard J. Skalski, 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, listening to Polka music on Monday, May 1, 2018.

He was born September 18, 1928 in Sunderland, MA to Josephine (Rosienski) and Joseph A. Skalski. He graduated from Deerfield High School and spent a year at Stockbridge School of Agriculture before serving his country during the Korean War. He was a carpenter by trade and built his first structure, a tobacco barn for the family farm at the age of 19.   He started his career with Edward Craft of South Deerfield and retired from Aquadro & Cerruti of Northampton.

He married Steffie (Stachelek) in 1953. They lived on the family farm on South Mill River Road, South Deerfield while he built Steffie her dream house also on South Mill River Road. It was there that they started their family. They bought the family farm in the mid-sixties and spent the rest of their lives there.

He was a hardworking man, often leaving early for work, home for dinner and back out the door to do side jobs. He built two more houses on South Mill River Road and helped with the construction of his daughter’s homes in Conway and Bernardston.   He enjoyed being in the woods pruning and cutting fire wood and driving his tractor and bulldozer. In his younger years he was an avid snowmobiler. When he retired he finally enjoyed taking a day off now and again for a bus trip and an annual outing to Cape Cod with friends.

Leonard was a great man; always had a welcoming smile, a firm hand shake, a helping hand, a funny story and he loved to make people laugh. He was an avid reader, liked his war movies and really enjoyed listening and dancing to Polka music. As attested by family and friends, when they danced with him, their feet never hit the ground!!

Leonard touched the hearts of many people and will be sorely missed. He leaves behind his children, Pamela Fisk of South Deerfield, Sandra LaCoy and her husband Eugene of Bernardston, Arno and his wife Jacqueline (Tannian) and son-in-law Jon Morel. He had five grandchildren; Kiel McAvoy and his fiancé Jade Littlefield, Tyler Fisk, Jared Fisk and his wife Cassidy (Hallowell), Lauren LaCoy and Cassandra LaCoy, and four great grandchildren, Dillinger and Lila McAvoy, and Brinlynn and Marylyn Fisk.   He also leaves behind his loving sister Regina Boron, many nieces and nephews who all have their own fond memories of Len.

He was predeceased by the love of his life his wife, Steffie, who he missed very much, and his daughter, Rebecca Morel. He was also predeceased by his sister Rachel Brogan, her husband Jack Brogan, and their daughter Gillian and son Benjamin, his brother Frederick Skalski, brother-in-Law Raymond Boron and many close and dear friends.

Pam, Sandi and Arno would like to thank Leonard’s wonderful caregivers, Cathy Klerowski, Zofia Konopko, Ewa Syrowik, Agata Wiktorska, Caitlin Bukolsky, Nina Martin-Anzuoni, Deb Wood and Julie Kroll. Without your caring and loving ways we would not have been able to let him live out his life at his home.

There are no calling hours. A burial for Leonard and Steffie will be held at Brookside Cemetery in South Deerfield followed by a Celebration of Life (place to be determined) on Sunday, September 16, 2018.
