Lauretta May (Bonnette) Gass

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11am in the Holy Family Church. A calling hour will be Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 at the Wrisley Funeral Home in South Deerfield

Lauretta May (Bonnette) Gass was called home to God on 12/26/17 with her family by her side. She was born at home, the 11th child of Alice Laura (Berthiaume) and Albert Glaude Bonnette on June 25, 1930 in the village of Turners Falls in the Town of Montague, MA.

 

She graduated from St. Anne’s Parochial School in 1944 and Turners Falls High School in 1948. She attended Greenfield Community College nights majoring in Business Administration. She started her banking career working as a bookkeeper, safe deposit attendant, substitute secretary and loan clerk at the First National Bank and Trust Co. on Bank Row in Greenfield, MA. She also worked in the Personnel Office of the Greenfield Tap & Die Co. of Greenfield until she married her loving husband July 10, 1954. All their married life was spent in South Deerfield where they raised their four children.

 

She returned to banking in 1973 as head teller at the opening of the Greenfield Savings Bank branch in South Deerfield advancing to Branch Manager and Loan Organizer, retiring in July 1995.

 

She was a member of the former St. James Catholic Church and now the Holy Family Catholic Church of South Deerfield and member of the Rosary Society. She was active in the Lake Wyola Association where she was secretary, clerk and treasurer, served on many committees including the Department of Conservation and Recreation for preserving the quality of the lake and Lake Wyola Advisory Committee. She was a past president and trustee for Brookside Cemetery and helped to record interments in their computer. She and her husband spent many summers at Lake Wyola where she enjoyed swimming, kayaking, walking her dog on the DCR trails, caring for family and grandchildren. She kept busy with vegetable and flower gardens, canning, freezing, knitting, crewling, embroidery, sewing and reading.

 

She is survived by her husband Edward of 63 years, daughters Karen Bartos and companion Curt Fiske of Millers Falls and Jacqueline Staelens of Conway, son Paul of Greenfield, grandchildren Eric and Dustin Gass, Samantha and Hannah Staelens, Michael Bartos and Zachary Wysocki. A son Daniel preceded her death in 1988.

 

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11am in the Holy Family Church. A calling hour will be Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 at the Wrisley Funeral Home in South Deerfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Family Church Renovation Fund, Franklin County Sheriff’s Animal Rescue Shelter, Sandy Lane in Turners Falls, MA or the Dakin Animal Shelter in Leverett, MA.
