Kathryn Pyne Addelson

Kathryn Pyne Addelson died at home after a long courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 37 years, Richard, her daughters, Catherine Pyne, and Shawn Pyne, and her grandson, Sean Pyne-Moran. She also leaves her sister Barbara Etchells, and was predeceased by her sister Eileen Etchells. She was beloved by her 7 nieces and nephews, and will be missed by her four in laws, Jane Cook, Robert Addelson, Barbara Addelson, and Rosalind Greenstein.

 

Kathryn was born in Providence, Rhode Island on April 22, 1932 to Catherine and Joseph Etchells. She attended local schools in Providence, R.I., graduating from Classical High School and went on to receive her A.B. Degree, Summa Cum Laude, from Indiana University, and her Ph. D. From Stanford University, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa, and was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow.

 

Kathryn taught at Bryn Mawr College, City College, N.Y., and the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle, before finding a home at Smith College.   She was a Chaired Professor in the department of Philosophy and taught Women’s Studies and History of Science from 1972 until 2000, and was a Mary Huggins Gamble Professor. She authored 2 books: “Impure Thoughts”, and “Moral Passages: Notes toward a Collectivist Moral Theory”, as well as numerous other publications.

 

Kathryn was an active member of the Leverett community. She was a past President of the Leverett Co-op, and a founding member of the Rattlesnake Gutter Land Trust.
