Josephine Ann (Grader) Gibson, 89, of Greenfield, passed away at home, surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, October 14, 2018. She was born in Greenfield on December 27, 1928. The daughter of Austrian parents John and Pauline (Goffitzer) Grader, Josephine was raised in Greenfield and graduated from Greenfield High School in 1947. She worked for 23 years for the State of Massachusetts in the Greenfield Employment Division.

She married her husband, Donald on May 23, 1956. Together they loved to dance the Waltz at parties, weddings, and The Elks Club functions. Their favorite trips were to Europe and Canada. They were very social and enjoyed being with family and many special friends. The Grader family reunions, with relatives from Austria, were greatly enjoyed.

As a young woman Josephine was a gifted singer, who was trained at Deerfield Academy by the renowned voice coach for Oklahoma film star, Gordon McCrae. She pursued her singing career in New York City and made a solo album. She moved back to Greenfield to marry and raise a family. Josephine was a devoted mother who supported her children in pursuing their many activities and sporting events. She continued her singing career performing at local venues and was a fixture in many Greenfield Follies productions. Her talent was well known in the area by people of her generation. Josephine loved to read intrigue novels, mystery novels, and biographies. Her family and many friends greatly appreciated her beautifully handwritten letters, cards and thank you notes.

Josephine is survived by her children: Mark of Greenfield, Eric of Massachusetts, Lisa Herrmann (husband David) of Cameron Park, CA, and Gail Paradis (husband James) of Greenfield; her brother John “Hunsie” (wife Judy) of Scituate, MA; and her sister Pauline of New Boston, NH. Josephine was predeceased by her husband Donald in 2010, and her sister Mary (Mitzi) Markoski of Greenfield, MA.

Josephine was most proud of her 8 grandchildren: Arthur (Nicole) Gibson, Kathy (Oscar) Sandoval, Matthew Gibson, Daniel (Kara) Ruhmshottel, Nick (Kristen) Gibson, Brendon Gibson; Emerson Herrmann, and Brienne Paradis. All will greatly miss their “Nani” including 6 great-grandchildren, 3 of whom were born this year.
