South Deerfield- John Melnick , 89, of Graves Street, passed away at the
Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Friday, October 28,2016 following a period of
declining health. Born in South Deerfield, MA. he was the son of the late Henry
and Julia (Biley) Melnick.
He attended local schools and
graduated from Deerfield High School, Class of 1946, and worked the family farm
in Pine Nook in South Deerfield. During the Korean War from 1954 to 1956, Joh n
was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. He lived there until 1959. He fell in love
with the area and traveled many trips back to Anchorage throughout his life
with his wife. He retired in 1990 from the West Experiment Station as a lab
technician at UMass, Amherst.
On May 20, 1950 he married Lucy G.
Dzieniszewski. John was an avid gardener, sharing his bounty with family and
friends. He had an outgoing personality and loved meeting people and
socializing. John enjoyed wine making, fishing, coin collecting and tending to
his flower and vegetable gardens and his raspberry bushes.
John is survived by his wife of 65
years, Lucy, daughter Angela Amidon of Turners Falls, son John H. Melnick of
Oregon, and grandson Jacob Amidon of Northfield. He also leaves a sister
Florence Muldoon of Oakham, MA. and several nieces and nephews. John was
predeceased by his brother Walter and sister Sophie Buczynski.
Our family would like to thank the
staff of Cooley Dickinson Hospital Hospice Staff and the staff at Poet Seat
Nursing Home in Greenfield, Ma. In keeping with his requests, there will be no
public services. Following cremation there will be a private scattering of his
ashes. The Wrisley Funeral Home in South Deerfield has charge of arrangements.

Valley Humane Society, 163 Montague Road, Leverett, Mass. 01054.
