John L. Harris passed away on April 2, 2022 in his home after a period of failing health. John was born in Montague, MA, March 15, 1939, he had just turned 83. He was the son of the late Lawrence and Dorothy (Carpenter) Harris. John attended Smith Vocational School in Northampton. He was drafted into the US Army from 1957-1959 where he served in Germany. He was called back to Fort Bragg in 1961 for 9 months to rally support for the Cuban Conflict.

After high school John worked for the Town of Conway highway department where he returned after serving in the Army. A large part of his work history included many years in construction where he was an equipment operator for Warner Brother's, Max Antes and Bill Whitehouse. After his retirement he became a security guard for Historic Deerfield.

John was an avid gardener. What started as a small plot in the center of Conway eventually became two large gardens at the home he built with his wife Dottie. He constructed a vegetable stand with an honor system at the bottom of their driveway and took pride in keeping it stocked with their own produce. He loved working with wood, from building furniture to maintaining multiple wood lots and processing 150 cords per year (in his spare time). John took great pride in his property and kept his lawn impeccably groomed. Some called it "the park" or "the golf course" with its traveling pink flamingos. In early retirement John and his wife loved to go on cruises. Later on, a perfect day for John included "going on tour" around the back roads of Franklin County looking for small fishing holes and going out to lunch.

John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothie (Wrisley) Harris also of Conway; his children Michelle Harris of Conway, his son Walter Harris of Port Townsend WA and his partner Annie Lovato; his brother Douglas (Linda) Harris of Interlochen, FL; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Jon and Julia Clark of Conway and a brother-in-law Larry Shearer of Colrain; many cousins, nieces, and nephews. John was predeceased by his sister Patricia (Harris) Shearer and her son Steven.

John will be cremated, and the family will have a private burial. The family will honor his wishes and there will be no formal services. There will be a celebration of life, Sunday May 1st, at the South Deerfield Polish Club from 1-4. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Conway Ambulance, PO Box 240, Conway, MA 01341. Arrangements are under the direction of Wrisley Funeral Home of South Deerfield
