SOUTH DEERFIELD – Irving J. Milewski, 84, a life-long resident of South Deerfield, MA, passed away on Thursday March 16th, 2017 at Charlene Manor in Greenfield, MA.

Born December 28, 1932 in South Deerfield, he was the son of Agnes (Turbak) and Joseph Milewski. He graduated from Deerfield High School in 1950, and from Deerfield Academy in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955.

After the war, Irving returned to school, receiving his Bachelor’s Degree from American International College and his Masters +30 from Westfield State University. He then met and married Dorothy M. Shumway on August 1,1959.

Irving was destined to be a teacher. His career began at Frontier Regional High School in 1959, where he inspired countless students for 34 years as a seventh-grade math teacher. He was a caring educator, always willing to go beyond what was expected to help every individual advance and learn. As a dedicated coach, he guided students, including his own children, to physically excel, and also officiated countless sporting events.

An athlete in his own right, Irving always enjoyed the challenge of a good golf match, and was a dedicated fan of the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox franchises.

A talented artist, Irving not only painted homes with fellow teaching colleagues during the summers, but found a passion for painting on slate and canvas, producing well over 500 pieces including those of birds, people’s homes, and outdoor nature scenes.

Irving also enjoyed working on small engines and repairing and building furniture. He was of the mindset that nothing was ever too insignificant to keep and utilize in future projects. And, thanks to his parent’s teaching, he also became a proficient gardener; producing abundant crops year after year; a skill he passed on to his son Scott.

Irving cherished time with family and friends; always at the ready to lend a helping hand or listening ear. His faith was the cornerstone of his life; impressing upon his family, “God is always with you.” He was a member of St. James Church and Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, both in South Deerfield.

Irving is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Dorothy, and three children: Brian and wife Diane Milewski of Haverhill, MA, Gary and his wife Kathy Milewski of Merrimac, MA, and Scott Milewski of Sunderland, MA; five grandchildren: Matthew and wife Adria Milewski of Salt Lake City, UT, Caitlin Milewski of Boston, MA, Joshua Milewski of Merrimac, MA, Mac Milewski of Dorchester, MA, and Whitney Milewski of Durham, NH. He also leaves one sister: Jennie Cwieka of South Hadley, MA.

A wake will be held on Wednesday March 22nd from 9 to 10:30 a.m., Wrisley Funeral Home, 90 Sugarloaf St., South Deerfield, MA, followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m., reception and meal, at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, 29 Sugarloaf St., South Deerfield, MA.
