Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 19th at 9:15AM from the Wrisley Funeral Home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00Am in Holy Family Church with the Rev. Philippe Roux, pastor officiating. Calling Hours will be Wednesday, Feb.18th from 4-7PM

       Whately, MA.- Francis R. Smith,92, of 204 Long Plain Road, Whately died Thursday night, February 12,2015 in the Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. He was born in Whately March 26, 1922, the son of John and Stephania (Hoynoski) Smiarowski. He was educated in Whately schools and graduated from Deerfield High School in 1939. In early years he worked on the family farm and later General Cigar Corp. He also worked for Meyer & Mendelsohn Inc. and later retired from the University of Mass.

 

        Francis married Dorothy Pipione on October 9, 1948. She died in 1959. He married Mildred Pipione April 20, 1959 in St. Mary’s Church in Turners Falls. She predeceased him in 2006. Francis was a communicant of Holy Family Church, South Deerfield. He was active in church affairs. He was a Whately assessor, and a member of the Bicentennial Committee. He was a lifelong New York Yankee fan and a fanatic UConn

Women’s’ basketball fan.

 

       He is survived by three sons, Richard E. and his wife Sandra, Robert F. and his wife Mary Ellen, and William J. and his wife Kathleen all of Whately. Four grandchildren, Matthew of Greenfield, Nathan of Hatfield, Geoffrey of Bennington, Vt. and Zachary of Whately. Also nieces and nephews.

 

         Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 19th at 9:15AM from the Wrisley Funeral Home, Sugarloaf Street, South Deerfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00Am in Holy Family Church with the Rev. Philippe Roux, pastor officiating. Calling Hours will be Wednesday, Feb.18th from 4-7PM. Donations in his memory may be made to the Whately Emergency Vehicle or the Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
