Florence M. Johnson, 83, of Hadley, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at home with her family by her side. Born May 4, 1929 in Taunton, MA, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Katherine Petecki.
Florence was a 1947 graduate of Taunton High School. For many years, she was employed as a secretary at the Church Coal, Robertson Curtain and Pierce Hardware Companies all of Taunton.
Desiring to see what was beyond the confines of her hometown, Florence enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952. She completed Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas and was stationed at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee. At Westover, she was assigned to the 1600th Air Police Squadron as secretary to Provost Marshal Captain Albert J. Lilly. Florence was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal.
She was a devoted mother and a constant source of knowledge and inspiration and will be especially missed by her son Brett. Florence is survived by her husband Andrew Johnson, sons Drew Johnson, Brett Johnson, daughter Joni Kolakowski and her husband Stanley, her brother Ted Petecki and her sister Pauline Lewis.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 am from the Wrisley Funeral Home, 90 Sugarloaf Street, So. Deerfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 am at the Base Chapel, (James Street Entrance), Westover Air Force Base, Chicopee. Burial with Military Honors will be in Old Hadley Cemetery on Cemetery Road, Hadley at 12:45 pm.
Those attending the Mass at Westover Air Force Base will need to pre-register at the Funeral Home during calling hours on Sunday from 5 to 8 pm, for security reasons.
