Funeral services will be Sunday, July 6, 2014 at 1pm in Robbins Memorial Church, Greenfield with Deb Cory officiating. Burial will follow in West Deerfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the Wrisley Funeral Home will be Saturday evening from 5-7pm

Deerfield, MA – Ella Bridges Cole Newcomb, 101 of 10 Jones Road, Deerfield, died Thursday, July 3, 2014 in Buckley Health Care Center in Greenfield. She was Deerfield’s oldest citizen, born in So. Deerfield, June 1, 1913, the daughter of Clinton and Ethel Bridges.

 

Ella was educated in Deerfield schools and graduated from the former Deerfield High School in the class of 1931. She earned her degree from State College in 1936, now the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She married her first husband, Waldo Cole, they had a son Phillip. While Phillip was young, Ella ran a nursery school in So. Deerfield next to Fisher’s Garage. Ella had a long 35 year teaching career as a 1st through 3rd grade teacher in the Sunderland Elementary School. She met her second husband Herb Newcomb at a Sunderland Grange meeting and married in 1964. They made their home in West Deerfield.

 

She is survived by one son, Phillip Cole and his wife Dianne of Indianapolis, IN; three step-daughters, Lois Zieper, Jane Drumgool and Mary Grover, her brother Richard Bridges and his wife Wanda; her sister Ruth Herzig of So. Deerfield; 19 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and nieces & nephews.
