SOUTH DEERFIELD - Elizabeth A. "Betty"
Hollingsworth, 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 9th, 2016 after
an extended illness. She was born in
Hatfield, MA on December 11, 1928 to Philip and Susie (Hayes) Harris. She graduated from Deerfield High School in
1946 and attended Northampton Commercial College for two years. Betty was employed for 39 years within the
Frontier Regional (Deerfield High School) School District/School Union 38 in
various positions and retired as the Business Manager and Treasurer.
Betty devoted much of her life to volunteering in the
community. She was a founding member of
the Greenfield Figure Skating Club and served as an instructor for many
years. She served as the Coordinator of
the BLIND Ski Program at Mt Tom for 28 years, Treasurer of Catholic Charities
for St. James Church (So. Deerfield) for 37 years, Chairman of the Deerfield
Unit of the Salvation Army for 12 years, Secretary of the Deerfield High School
Reunion Association for 28 years, USO volunteer in the 1950s and again over the
last 6 years, member of the Deerfield Memorial Day Committee including a key
role in the sub- committee for the Deerfield Veterans’ Street Sign
Project. Additionally, she wrote the
Santa Claus reply letters to local children for the South Deerfield Post Office
for 56 years until the program was discontinued in 2008.
She was a year-round swimmer and served as a certified
lifeguard in her youth and again in her later years until the age of 86. She enjoyed skating, attending tag sales with
her friends, genealogy, photo re-creation, traveling, skiing, and cooking. In her youth, Betty figure skated in many ice
shows across New England. In retirement, prior to her husband’s death, they
enjoyed regular trips to their western Tennessee vacation home to spend time
with his family. She was also a breast
Betty was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Thomas
G. Hollingsworth, in 2009, her brother Donald Harris, her brother John Harris
and his wife Judy, her infant brother Gerald Harris, and her niece Shannon
(Harris) Ryder. She is survived by her
son, Thomas L. Hollingsworth and his life partner Migdalia Ayala, her
sister-in-law Alice (Childs) Harris, nieces and nephews J. C. Harris and his
wife Jenny, Daniel Harris, Sandi Harris-Graves and her husband Michael,
Christopher Harris, Robyn Harris, Shane Harris and his wife Valorie, and former
daughter-in-law Elizabeth Fitz. Betty
received and appreciated considerable help from her niece, Robyn Harris, in her
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec.14th at 9:15AM from the
Wrisley Funeral Home, Sugarloaf Street, South Deerfield followed by a Liturgy
of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in Holy Family Church with Fr. Jonathan Reardon, pastor, officiating .
Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from
5-7:00PM. The Rosary Confraternity will recite the Rosary Tuesday evening at
5:00PM at the funeral home.
