Whately - Carl W. Brooks, 86 of Whately, MA passed away on August 30, 2017 after a brief illness. Carl was born July 19, 1931 in Jamaica, Vermont to Kenneth and Bertha Brooks. Carl spent much of his youth on the family farm in Chester, VT. He met his lovely wife Wilma (nee Lloyd) of 65 years while they attended Commercial College in Northhampton. Carl served with distinction during the Korean War where he earned several medals. Carl and Wilma owned a successful business together, The Typewriter Shop, in Northampton. They purchased a farm in Whately in 1961 where they raised their three sons. Carl was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. In 1969 Carl bought his first Arctic Cat snowmobile. Sledding became one of his life-long passions. He would sometimes organize a trail-side hot dog roast for the clubs. He volunteered much of his time to the Greater Whately Snowmobile Club and the Snowmobile Association of Massachusetts (S.A.M.) where he managed and distributed sinage. He was a devoted member of the Whately Congregational Church and his help with the Annual Labor Day Chicken BBQ will be sorely missed this year. Whately voters will remember him as the Republican poll watcher.   Carl leaves behind his beautiful wife Wilma, three sons, Lloyd Brooks of New Salem, and his partner Laurie McKay, David Brooks of Shutesbury and his partner Jeannie Crane, and Jason Brooks of Northfield and his partner Kimberly Johnson. He also leaves three wonderful grandchildren, Lloyd Brooks Jr., Jennifer Knapp, and Bobby Brooks. His family and his community will miss him dearly.
