Amherst – Anne Kathleen (High) Garcia of Amherst passed away at Calvin Coolidge Nursing Home in Northampton on February 20, 2013. Born in Fruita, Colorado on October 19, 1925 to Morris and Gertrude (Peterson) High.
In 1962, she married Raymundo Garcia Loera. After the death of her beloved husband Ray in 1980, she and her children moved from Cuernavaca, Mexico to San Diego where they lived until 1984, when she moved to Somerville, MA. She found work as an administrative assistant at MIT in the office and lab of Professor Paul Schimmel where she worked until her retirement in 1995. In 2002, she moved to Western Mass where she had an apartment in her daughter’s home in Amherst.
Anne was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who played an active role in the lives of three generations. She provided strong guidance and abundant love to all. Her sense of humor, her quick intelligence, her continual interest in life and those around her, made her an endearing presence for her family and friends. She touched the lives of many in countless ways. She always made each and everyone feel special, and was always able and willing to listen to and counsel her children and grandchildren. She was an avid reader and never met a crossword puzzle she couldn’t complete nor a scrabble game she didn’t win.
She is survived by her son, Christopher Sawyer-Luacanno of Turners Falls and his wife Patricia Pruitt, her daughter, Maria Elena Garcia of Amherst, her son, Rolando Martin Garcia of Erving and his wife Andreana, and her son, Cesar Ricardo Garcia of Malden. Her grandchildren are Sarah Pruitt of Greenfield and Jessica Pruitt of Turners Falls, Marco and Roberto Garcia of Malden, Lauren Garcia of Chicago, Isabela Orlacchio-Garcia Joseph of Cambridge, Alejandra Garcia of Amherst and Gunnar and Gage Garcia of Erving. Her great-grandchildren are Imogene Pruitt-Spence, Felix and Eva Pruitt-Dahl, Aisha Pruitt-Gonzalez and Jeremiah and Valentina Orlacchio-Garcia Joseph.
A private memorial service will be held to commemorate her amazing life at a time to be announced.
