Obituary for Alice R. Fleming

With heavy hearts the family announces the peaceful passing of Alice Kathryn Read Fleming, 84, of Sunderland, on Thursday, February 16, 2017. She was born on December 6, 1932, in Fairfield, CT, and was the beloved youngest daughter of the late Elmer Joel Read and Grace Osborn Read.

Alice graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1951. She worked as a medical secretary in Pittsfield where she was introduced to the love of her life, Daniel J. Fleming, Jr. They married on September 15, 1953 and raised four children, moving to Sunderland in 1966 into one of the oldest houses in Sunderland, a saltbox built in 1720. They worked hard for many years to restore this home to its original state. Alice loved being a self-described homemaker and was an incredible mom, not only to her own 4 children but also to many of their close friends. Alice assisted in her children’s Cub Scout and Girl Scout troops, was an active member of the Sunderland Women’s Club and PTA, and was instrumental in starting the flower gardens in the center of Sunderland. She loved her large rock garden, flower arranging, theorem and tole painting, stenciling, antiques, ephemera and making braided wool rugs. She was a great baker, an accomplished seamstress, and self-taught computer wizard  (having a 100% rating on EBay for her ephemera sales) after her retirement from UMass Bookstore and Annex after 15 years (often sneaking out so as not to miss any of her kids’ sporting events).

Alice and Dan enjoyed traveling cross country and for many years sold at antique/ephemera shows throughout the east coast, making many dear friends across the country. She and her family enjoyed many summer days at Laurel Lake as well as trips to Cape Cod and Maine. Alice was a very selfless, loving and devoted mother, valuing her commitment to her family above all else. Family and friends will always remember her spontaneous acts of kindness, her generous heart and good humor. She will be greatly missed by all those lives that she touched.

Alice is survived by her feisty husband of 63 years, Daniel, their four children, Debbie Spataro of Dallas, TX, Kathy Fleming of Longmeadow, MA, Cindy Majewski and her husband, Dan, of Sunderland, and John Fleming of Port Townsend, WA, her grandchildren David Spataro and wife Lisa, Jennifer Robinson and husband Roscoe, Jeremy Smith and Hannah Smith-Catanese and husband Mikael, Elizabeth Quinn and husband Mike, Amanda Majewski-Winn and husband Mike, Abigail Majewski and partner Ryan Murphy, Tanner and Isaiah Fleming. And let’s not forget her 7 great-grandchildren Owen, Chase, Jackson, Quinn, Henry, Jack and Mariah, and several nieces and nephews. Her sisters Esther Read Kreider and Dorothy May Read Plankey and her beloved Auggie doggies I, II and III predeceased her.

The family sends a very special and heartfelt thank you to all of Alice’s beloved and compassionate caregivers for their unwavering support through this journey. Thanks also go to all the staff at Golden Moments Adult Day Health Spa for enriching Alice’s life, for their ongoing family support and TLC. Thank you to the staff at the New England Health Center for their care and kindness in Alice’s last days.

In lieu of flowers, Alice’s family asks that you pay it forward with an act of kindness in her memory. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 25, at the Wrisley Funeral Home in South Deerfield. Calling hours: 1:00 – 2:00 PM, service at 2 PM, with a reception to follow. Burial will be at convenience of the family.
