Albert E.J. Ress

Funeral Services will be held Friday, Dec.18th, at 9:15AM from the Wrisley Funeral Home, Sugarloaf St., South Deerfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial in Holy Family Church at 10:00AM with Fr. Jonathan Reardon , pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Brigid’s Cemetery, Hadley. Calling hours will be held Thursday, Dec.17th from 5-8PM

         Albert E.J. Ress of Kokomo, Indiana died on December 10, 2015 at North Woods Village. He was a resident of Sunderland, Mass. for 55 years. He was predeceased in death by his wife of 46 years Rose J. (Cicia) Ress who died in 1992.

         He was born on August 4, 1923 in Youngstown, Ohio the son of Joseph S. and Marion (Papp) Ress. Al attended Youngstown schools graduating from Chaney High School and was a member of the Youngstown Junior Symphony Orchestra as a violinist and drummer.

 

         During World War II he served with the 87th Infantry Division, 1674th Engr. Utility Detachment and was deployed overseas in the European Theater Operations until his discharge in 1946 with the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the following medals: Good Conduct, American Theater, Victory, European Theater with two Bronze Stars for the Rhineland and Ardennes campaigns. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he married his wife Rose and settled in Amherst, Mass., going to work as an electrician at the University of Mass. In 1959 he went to American Electric Supply Co. as a sales engineer. He then went into construction as an electrician for the IBEW Local 7 for 14 years. In 1979 he returned back to the University of Mass. as an electrician until his retirement in 1988.

 

           Having moved in 1952 to Sunderland, Mass. Al became very active in community affairs and military veterans organizations. He was a member of the Sunderland Zoning Board, Finance Committee (becoming the chairman) and secretary of the building committee. He was also a charter member and vice-president of the Sunderland Lions Club. Al was vice-commander of the DAV Life Chapter 75 of Belchertown, Mass. and a member of VFW Post 754 of Amherst, Mass. Al was a member of the former St. James Church in South Deerfield.

 

         Al moved to Kokomo, Indiana in 2009 to be cared for by his son Robert. His interests were in music, woodworking, and family genealogy.

 

         Al is survived three sons: Robert F. Ress (Beverly) of Kokomo, Ind., Stephen M. Ress (Deb) of South Carolina and Richard A. Ress (Laureen) of Sunderland, Mass.; five grandchildren, James M. Ress, Tracey A. Ress, Candy J. Ress, Edward A. Ress, and Neil R. Ress., as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Al was predeceased by a brother Joseph V. Ress. of Calif.
